Our area is rich with significant Civil War sites, including Stones River National Battlefield, along with many other historic attractions. See how the Tennesseans of two centuries ago lived, at Cannonsburgh Village, a living history museum of early Southern life, or tour the circa-1859 Rutherford County Courthouse. Kids love the Discovery Center, a hands-on children's museum with 20 acres of outdoor wetlands to explore, and fitness buffs and nature lovers alike delight in our greenway system, which includes miles of trails that border both Stones River and Lytle Creek. If you want to see firsthand how cars are made, be sure to tour the Nissan plant in Smyrna. And if you like your fun adrenaline-charged, be sure to visit the Nashville Superspeedway during race weekend. All this and more is ready for you to explore here in Rutherford County.

Check out our many parks — Barfield Crescent Park & Wilderness Station, Old Fort Park & Golf Course, Kid's Castle playground, and the Bark Park in Murfreesboro. Beat the summer heat at the new Sports*Com water park in Murfreesboro and the Splash Pad at Gregory Mills Park in Smyrna. Rutherford County also boasts paved greenway trail systems in Murfreesboro and Smyrna, six public golf courses, several sports complexes and baseball and soccer fields, as well as fishing and boating on scenic Percy Priest Lake in La Vergne. Murfreesboro Greenway System

  • The Murfreesboro Greenway is a 10-mile paved handicap-accessible trail system that borders the Stones River and Lytle Creek. Features two canoe access points, four fishing piers and two spur trails—one to Stones River National Battlefield and one to the Gateway Island. Walking, running, bicycling and in-line skating are allowed.

  • Daylight use only; gates close one hour before dusk.

  • No admission charged.
  • Location: Eleven trailheads are scattered along the route.

Nashville Superspeedway

Take the hassle out of race weekend! Stay in Murfreesboro, Smyrna, La Vergne, or Eagleville, Tennessee. The Nashville Superspeedway is located just 30 miles southeast of Nashville off of Interstate 24.

  • From the North (Kentucky): Take I-65 south toward Nashville. Then take I-24 east, approximately 2 miles to I-40 east toward Knoxville. You will be on I-40 east approximately 30 miles to exit #235, which is State Route 840 west, toward Murfreesboro. Go 10 miles to exit # 65, Nashville Superspeedway. Turn left at the top of the exit.
  • From the South (Alabama): Take I-65 north to exit #65, which is highway 96 east. Go approximately 13 miles to the 4-way stop intersection in Triune. Turn right onto 41A/31A south. Go approximately 5/10 of a mile to State Route 840 east toward Lebanon. Go approximately 23 miles to exit #65, Nashville Superspeedway. Turn right at the exit ramp.

    From the East (Knoxville): Take I-40 west to exit #235, which is State Route 840 west, toward Murfreesboro. Go 10 miles to exit #65, Nashville Superspeedway. Turn left at the top of the exit.

    From the West (Memphis): Take I-40 east to Nashville. Staying on I-40 east, go approximately 30 miles from downtown Nashville to exit #235, which is State Route 840 west, toward Murfreesboro. Go 10 miles to exit #65, Nashville Superspeedway. Turn left at the top of the exit.

    From I-24 (Nashville): Take I-24 east to exit #74, which is State Route 840. Follow signs to Lebanon/Knoxville. Go approximately 12 miles to exit #65, Nashville Superspeedway. Turn right at top of exit.

    From I-24 (Chattanooga/Murfreesboro): Take I-24 west toward Nashville to exit 74B, which is State Route 840. Follow signs to Lebanon/Knoxville. Go 12 miles to exit #65, Nashville Superspeedway. Turn right at the top of the exit.

Family Fun

Spend a day engaged in hands-on learning with the kids at Discovery Center at Murfree Spring, an interactive museum and environmental center for visitors of all ages. With hundreds of fun exhibits, 20 acres of outdoor wetlands and daily programs, there is something for the entire family to enjoy. Or spend an afternoon watching newly-minted cars roll off the line at the 5.4 million-square-foot Nissan North America factory in Smyrna, which will soon be the sole manufacturing site of the all-electric Nissan LEAF. When you're done with all of that, while away some leisure hours enjoying movies, laser tag, bowling and go-carts. You bring the family, and we'll bring the fun!

Discovery Center at Murfree Spring

Discovery Center is an interactive museum and environmental center created for the children and families of Middle Tennessee and is dedicated to promoting excellence in education through hands-on exhibits and programs with 15 permanent, indoor exhibit areas; 20 acres of wetland habitat, several associated outdoor exhibits.

  • Daily programs and exhibits include:

    Tennessee Live: Discover the aquatic world in our living stream table, hold ancient sea creatures and enjoy a visit with our live animals.

    Newton's Loft: Lift your friends with a giant pulley, invent your own simple machine and make a full-body impression on the pinscreen.

    Creation Station: Paint, sculpt, draw and participate in art projects all day.

Nissan North America, Inc. Tours

  • Take a fun motorized tour through the multi-billion-dollar manufacturing plant which produces several of the top Nissan vehicles, including the all-electric LEAF. See all parts of the vehicle assembly process, from cutting large sheets of steel to painting the exterior and installing carpet.
  • Hours:
  • Tours are offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Visitors view a video about the company and then ride the tram on a guided tour of the plant. No children under the age of 10 are allowed on the tour. Cameras, including camera phones, are not allowed in the plant. Advance reservations are required.
